Track of the Day - Tanya Morgan ft. Phonte & Brittany Bosco-“She’s Gone”
When it comes to listening to new music I have an obsessive compulsive need to download just about every new song I can get my hands on. Snippets, tagged songs, repackaged mixtapes. Whatever. I download it all. Whatever is up on the big hip-hop blogs I feel a need to not miss a beat and expose my ears to all the possible music out there. This works great for hearing new music. I am constantly finding new tunes and if I don’t update my iPhone every week or two I start to get antsy. This is all fine, but I have a second compulsive behavior to completely over play certain albums.
No matter how much new music I download and add to playlists I find myself re-listening to certain albums and artists. Over the past year or so Kid Cudi, Kanye, 88-Keys, Drake, Blu and the Cool Kids have had albums that I have had on repeat and can’t stop listening to. The latest addition to that group is Tanya Morgan’s Brooklynati.
I had a press copy of the album in the form of a download link about two weeks before the album came out. After one listen I ordered a physical copy. (support!) I’ve been a big fan of the group for a while, in particular front man Von Pea’s style has always contained a unique sonic element in his tone and slight lisp that has made his verses stand out on the majority of the projects he has worked on. The groups collabo track with 88-Keys, “cuddle bums,” is still a favorite. On this album, the group seems to have completely found their stride and the comfort shows through on the majority of the project.
On “She’s Gone” the trio is joined by the always classic sounds of Little Brother’s Phonte. This guy has impressed me tremendously in all that he has done, and this track is no exception. A perfect match to Von’s production. If you enjoy the song, I can’t recommend this album enough. By far, this has been my favorite release of ‘09 to date.
