9th Wonder x NaS : God’s Stepson
Last post before shutting down the weekend–I have more to get to, but this week seems a bit slow so I should have more time than usual to post.
Yesterdays post for Mixtape of the Week inspired me to go digging through some of my CD binders and look at the mixtapes that I used to love before hundreds were available to me daily.
Back in college I used to make a monthly trek from Storrs to Waterbury to go to New York Music Connection, the worlds smallest record store, to pick up mixtapes. Eventually I got allmixtapes.com to send me a stack of tapes a week, but before that power move I would scrape together some cash and head out with a friend or two to pick up what wasn’t available on limewire, and certainly not finding its way to the mall record stores.
One of my favorite memories from the trip was getting to meet Big Mike while he was dropping off a stack of CD’s for the owner. At the time he was doing some of the best mixes around and almost always had exclusives I couldn’t find anywhere else. Now years later when I hear his tapes I’ve seen just about every track leaked out one by one over the NMC.
The first time I went to New York Music Connection I bought 15 mixtapes at 5 for 20. Nowadays that seems so crazy to me, but it was too good of a deal at the time. Most of these tapes were lost a few years back when I lent one of the binders to a ‘friend’ to rip a few choice albums. This kids will be a friend again when all have been returned, but I digress. That day I picked up a tape that was suggested by the owner, 9th Wonder’s God Stepson. I was already a big fan of Little Brothers The Listening, and this was when Jay-z’s the Black Album was out and Threat knocked as my favorite track from that album. 9th’s production had a new sound that with the right MC blended perfectly.
This is what God’s Son should have sounded like. I have both the original version and this version in my collection, but these tracks I don’t skip in my itunes shuffle.
Those trips to Waterbury with friends was part of what made getting new music so exciting. A part of that is lost with the ease of the internet and because of that these classic mixtapes have a higher vaule to me then a lot of what is out now, but for those that weren’t up, its time to share.
