So last night as I was getting ready to leave the office I was handed a pair of tickets from the music editor to check out the Asher Roth/Chester French show at the Gramercy. I just finished posting up a blog post over at The Volume which includes the video below, plus this slideshow I threw together from the performance.

VIDEO: Asher Roth - ‘Lark on my go kart’

Posting just to get more hate IM’s from Jeff. Come on give it a shot. At least for the humor of Teddy Rupskin holding a revolver.

Track of the Day - Asher Roth ‘Lark on my Go Kart’

I don’t care how much you think this kid sounds like Em, this sounds really promising. College kids are going to eat this album up. He is going to make a killing touring campuses and would be a great pick for UConn for Spring Weekend.

This is the opening track to the upcoming album Asleep in the Bread Isle. From what I’ve heard, this leaked a bit early, and I’ve noticed it pulled from a number of sites for download. Well, I don’t think I generate enough traffic for anyone to notice, so download the track here.

Semtex X Asher Roth

Asher gives up a full 20 minute interview talking about his entry into the game. Semtex has always been great at these interviews. Maybe its just because the interviews I’ve of his are always with very out going artists, but he seems to get them to the point where the feel very comfortable talking for extended periods of time. Too often hip-hop interviews are filled with short one word answers and name of album drop plugs throughout. In this, and his past interviews, Semtex lets the artists take the forefront of the conversation with little interruption.

On a personal note/rant, a highlight from this interview is Asher mentioning Jay-z’s Vol 2. being the first hip-hop album he ever bought. I remember being a sophomore in high school and ridding in this chicks car and her buying that CD. She put in the disc, skipped straight to Hard Knock Life and said she would probably never listen to the rest of the album. Noawadays she would probably just buy the track over the air on an iphone.

And the music industry wonder why sales are down. I wish Asher and everyone else in the class of ‘09 much success.

Asher Roth loves hip-hop

A short interview with Asher talking about his coming up and progression into a hip-hop artist. The strength of Asher as being more then an Eminem clone is going to be how honest he is as a fan first. This kid is super relatable for guys like me who grew into hip-hop late and really embraced the culture. It wasn’t always something that was always directed at who I was, but that didn’t matter because of the respect I had for the music.

I see that respect in Asher as he discusses learning about it late and not having the same inspirational icons to his music that the last generation did. This reminds me of Blu talking about DMX being a huge influence to his ambitions in a music career. With both of these guys, and the rest of the XXL Freshman class, we’re seeing an entire new era of artists that are inspired not by the golden age of 88, but by the big business of 98 and the economic crash of 08. Its a good sign of things to come. This hip-hop game needs new stars, and Asher seems ready to be one and also stay humble.
