Culturfied: Museum of the Moving Image and the Jim Henson’s Fantastic World exhibit
Many of us make it a goal to better ourselves as part of a NYE resolution and I, like many others, often find myself looking to make the most of the clean slate that is a new year. A personal goal this time: to enjoy a bit more of what the city has to offer and get a bit cultured. Once a week, I vow to take in some sort of culture, art, performance, show, maybe even just a movie. This week, a trip to Queens to visit the Museum of the Moving Image and to catch the Jim Henson exhibit before it closes down in March.
Above I have a few iPhone photos (note to self: next time bring the cam) with some highlight from the day. If you get a chance to make it out here, go on Sunday and be sure to hit The Astor Room for brunch beforehand; super cheap with a complimentary bloody and live jazz music.
As for the Museum itself, absolutely stunning. From info gathered from Foursquare tips, the spot was recently renovated in 2010 and it shows. Although the weekend will find you competing with families and children the Museum offers free admission on Friday afternoon and every ticket provides access to catch any screening available that day. We took in a 22 min episode of classic Black and White Dick Tracy complete with cheesy villains and episode cliff hanger.
With a ton of hands on stations like ADR, sound editing, film editing, stop motion and more, you can certainly learn a lot and stay busy making this a solid alternative to the big name museums and a valid excuse to get out to Queens for a day.
Oh, and the Jim Henson exhibit. See it.

One thing that has been of growing interest to me in relationship to music is the way in which artists can look a bit outside the box to make that cash. The idea of licensing music for TV, video games, movies and products is quickly becoming one of the only ways for an artist to truly earn a living and that paired with a heavy tour schedule is the apparent answer to the slow and eventual death of dollars for albums. This dilemma is rearranging the music world so much so that labels are forcing artists into 360 deals to maintain profit on artists through all of their endeavors, and not just back end on the music.
I don’t know what kind of deal Madlib has setup with Stonesthrow but its safe to say that both he and his label are some of the most inventive when it comes to finding new ways to trade cash for a physical project. When you can’t sell a CD anymore what do you do next? For Madlib, it became to create a niche product that likely has high markup and will be considered a must have for his fan base. Followers of most Stonesthrow artists seem to be the collector type. Those that care as much about buying the vinyl and the t-shirt as they do about downloading. I think they hit a home run here, and although most artists do not have the type of fan base to make this happen at a global level, there is, I believe, I take away here for all artists: Market and brand yourself beyond the normal channels. You never know what just might stick and become a buzzing product, and a buzzing product or idea could be that gateway to getting your music in more ears, and in turn, more dollars into your pocket. As an example of past idea that worked, look only as far as another Stonesthrow artists brilliance in Mayer Hawthorne. The success of his red heart shaped vinyl catapulted him from a DJ doing a two-track side project to a full fledged artists touring the nation and being the it artist for a moment in early 2010. His heart shaped USB drive might not have had the same response, but these are guys taking chances. It’s important to take those chances and continue to evolve the system before it takes you over.

Type/design nerds could spend hours lost on this website. A collection of type inspired work varying in styles and execution. I signed up for the sites newsletter and its a good thing they don’t sell these posters–I have enough outlets begging me to run up my credit daily, although I’m sure if you want you could find outlets for purchase.
Here is the bio of the site from the about section:
we intend to become a good resource of graphic and typographic posters to serve all your research needs – either historical or inspirational.
or ideal is simple: feed and consume quality.
although posters may contain illustrative and photographical content, we catalog only those with notable graphical or typographical quality.
just because we love the pure form of graphic design – shapes, types and colors.

Amazing. I can’t imagine how long this would take to edit, but it adds a really nice quality to the short. A great work around for wanting to take video at night if you can rely on your flash, and not worry about capturing audio. via vimeo
