Track of the Day - Kanye West “My Way”

An old favorite, featured on Kanye’s The Essentials mixtape. This mix came out right before The College Dropout and is still one I overplay. “My Way” features the original Kanye soul sample sound, and personally, I like it more than Jay-z’s “My Way” from the Blueprint 2.

The mixtape documents the begging of what has turned into one of the biggest Pop Stars of today. Other highlights include the original version of “Self Conscious” with the Lauren Hill, “Wanna Ride” ft Common and Ye’s remix of Dwele’s “Hold On.”

For any fans out there, I’ve zipped up the mixtape. Download here.

Who is Kanye West?

Jacked from Nahright. Damn, I miss old Kanye. College Dropout was such a huge part of my life when it came out. I was DJing on college radio and probably played every track on that album (minus workout plan) on the air over that year it was released. I remember seeing Ye at Uconn. He bailed on giving me an interview and cancelled all media appearances because the sound in the stadium was too ‘fucked up.’ Kanye literally sat down on the edge of the stage and said he would wait till the sound was fixed before he would continue on.

I remember recounting this to my college rep, Chico, at Def Jam. He says, “oh, Kanye didn’t give the 2 hour performance? Brother loves himself too much.” Or something like that. He was clowning around about Kanye loving to perform, but really thinking he was the greatest. I guess time is proving he had an idea of how big he would be, but I miss the slightly more humble Kanye. The one who thanked Mos Def and Talib Kweli at the end of every show.

Recently Fake Shore Drive posted up a mixtape Kanye West - The Lost Songs. The link on their site is dead, but you can download it here to remember some of the old chipmunk classic Kanye.

UNI X Mick Boogie Before There Was Love mixtape
Sitting here trying to upgrade the pwnage on my unlocked iphone (fingers crossed I still have a working phone) and in between downloads I noticed NahRight has the link up to download the new UNI mixtape. I haven’t had a change to give it the full listen yet, but I’m excited to be checking out more from this new group. Here is what Mick had to say about the project:

I finally got to work with one of my favorite new groups in hiphop… the fellas from U-N-I… and let me tell you… this mixtape is crazy. With production from Ro Blvd, 6th Sense, Dibia$e and more… and guest features including Talib Kweli, Evidence, Fashawn, Mickey Factz, Black Milk and my wedding videographer Tunji…lol… this shit is nuts from beginning to the end. And, of course, special Press Play show interludes complete the mix.

Download here. One or two more posts and its a wrap for Tuesday.

9th Wonder x NaS : God’s StepsonLast post before shutting down the weekend–I have more to get to, but this week seems a bit slow so I should have more time than usual to post.Yesterdays post for Mixtape of the Week inspired me to go digging through some of my CD binders and look at the mixtapes that I used to love before hundreds were available to me daily. Back in college I used to make a monthly trek from Storrs to Waterbury to go to New York Music Connection, the worlds smallest record store, to pick up mixtapes. Eventually I got allmixtapes.com to send me a stack of tapes a week, but before that power move I would scrape together some cash and head out with a friend or two to pick up what wasn’t available on limewire, and certainly not finding its way to the mall record stores. One of my favorite memories from the trip was getting to meet Big Mike while he was dropping off a stack of CD’s for the owner. At the time he was doing some of the best mixes around and almost always had exclusives I couldn’t find anywhere else. Now years later when I hear his tapes I’ve seen just about every track leaked out one by one over the NMC.The first time I went to New York Music Connection I bought 15 mixtapes at 5 for 20. Nowadays that seems so crazy to me, but it was too good of a deal at the time. Most of these tapes were lost a few years back when I lent one of the binders to a ‘friend’ to rip a few choice albums. This kids will be a friend again when all have been returned, but I digress. That day I picked up a tape that was suggested by the owner, 9th Wonder’s God Stepson. I was already a big fan of Little Brothers The Listening, and this was when Jay-z’s the Black Album was out and Threat knocked as my favorite track from that album. 9th’s production had a new sound that with the right MC blended perfectly. This is what God’s Son should have sounded like. I have both the original version and this version in my collection, but these tracks I don’t skip in my itunes shuffle. Those trips to Waterbury with friends was part of what made getting new music so exciting. A part of that is lost with the ease of the internet and because of that these classic mixtapes have a higher vaule to me then a lot of what is out now, but for those that weren’t up, its time to share.Download God’s Stepson

Mixtape of the Week - DJ Sean G Presents: Lever 2009 (Hosted by PacDiv)Starting a new weekly feature for whizhouse. Every weekend I’ll be profiling which ever mixtape has been getting the most burn in my itunes for the previous 7 days. With the way the internets hip-hop is going, I’m practically replacing my entire iPhone playlist every 7 days and while a majority of it is single tracks (and daily downloads of Cipha Sounds and Rosenberg) every week brings at least a few mixtapes to check out. This week during my daily hour commute dealing with the L trains fantastic service, I’ve had DJ Sean G’s Lever 2009 in my number 1 spot. While little of this mixtape was super new to me, it was a great collection of my recent favorites. The track list includes a few tracks that have made TOD honors on whizhouse with 88-Keys-Stay Up, Jay Electronica-Exhibit A, GLC-The Big Screen, and The Cool Kids-Pennies (video from Rock The Bells). On top of a solid selection of tracks the mix is not overly hosted by PacDiv and includes a few snippets from the group including a standout ‘she’ featuring Tiron. When the full version of this is out, it will most likely make its way to TOD. Also on the mixtape is one of my favorite tracks from this past fall, Tiron’s Sydney. Download the mixtape, and enjoy the weekend. Track list below.

Track of the Day - Black Milk ‘Try’

When the holidays came around I found myself with some spare cash and a gift card or two, which reminded me of the christmas before–and an itunes gift card I never used. With $25 bucks in digital dollars I decided to buy a couple albums from artists I had heard good buzz from (gotta support when you can).

I picked up Basic Vocab The General Dynamic album based on Entourage’s use of the song Come Get With It in the ending credits, and Black Milk’s Tronic. If you’re unfamiliar with the artist/producer check out what Current TV called one of the best mixtapes of 08 in ELEC (download). A strong outing in a mixtape with appearances from Royce, Pharoahe , Elzhi, Bishop Lamont and more. Coincidentally Black Milk also produced a song I spotlighted in video earlier this week, Colin Munroe’s Piano Lessons.

Enjoy the track, download if you like, and as a bonus, below the video for the Tronic’s single, Give the drummer sum.
