Track of the Day - Asher Roth ‘Lark on my Go Kart’

I don’t care how much you think this kid sounds like Em, this sounds really promising. College kids are going to eat this album up. He is going to make a killing touring campuses and would be a great pick for UConn for Spring Weekend.
This is the opening track to the upcoming album Asleep in the Bread Isle. From what I’ve heard, this leaked a bit early, and I’ve noticed it pulled from a number of sites for download. Well, I don’t think I generate enough traffic for anyone to notice, so download the track here.

Magazines.
Radar ran this piece recently discussing the death of the Lad mag. The section of men’s magazine comprising of Playboy, Maxim, FHM, Stuff, and even more titles coming out of England.
The writing in this piece is OK and it touches on some interesting parts of “The Formula” for putting together the 90’s version of mag empire but all these magazine died when they became stale and went to sex and crappy article only, nothing of any merit ever came out of Stuff or FHM towards the end, and Maxim still seem to only be holding based on its cover girls.
Playboy is the worst. Drew and I were talking about this the other day and how what might have made Playboy so great in the past was fizzled out to compete with the celeb heavy competitors and now you can’t even look through the article without feeling bad for the people who think these thing are cool. The style of the mag in its writing design and coverage is beyond boring, and there is something really unsettling about centerfolds born in 88.
I stopped reading these type of magazine early in college and moved on towards magazines like GQ, Details, and Esquire, although even these have become stale. I still enjoy GQ quite a bit, especially the first half of the mag that acts more as a guide to living, but I know Drew’s biggest beef with the magazine is its New York only focus. Although this happens with any magazine based in the big apple, I understand his grief with it. I love the coverage because I live here, and although its often behind New York magazine in timeliness, it does give great perspective on the city.
Yet still something is missing. There isn’t a great magazine out there that speaks to my people. Its part of the reason I subscribe to 6 o 7 different titles (GQ, Complex, Golf Digest, Esquire, Antenna, New York) and continue to buy more at the newsstand (really just Monocle) whenever I can. These magazine all tap into things I find interesting, but don’t really define the golfing, ex-hip hop DJ, poor New Yorker, works in media type of person I am.
I know I can find all of this online, but there is something I love about print and I always will - but print needs to grow with the times. Its not always going to fit to every person, but I am in that 24-35 male super target demo, and someone out there has to be willing to make a product that not only targets that demographic, but makes them care enough to read it cover to cover. Put out coverage on this I care about and I’ll read more about the world I don’t know.
